The demand for Refurbished computer drives is gaining momentum as more and more people are relying on computers for doing even their daily chore. A restored computer drive is a quality product at an affordable cost. Since money is a concern for many and in this time and age it is a deciding factor for even all of us, refurbished computer products are the first priority of most of the users.

Refurbished drives refer to those drives which were sent back to the manufacturer to correct operational disorders as complained by their users. At the facility, they are renovated and reconditioned for enhanced functionality. The manufacturer recycles and restores them to meet its quality standards. After thorough testing, the restored drive is repackaged to hit the market again. It comes with complete user manual and also carries an authentic warranty tag to satisfy even the most discerning customer. Since there is nothing to hide, these computer drives are sold as re-manufactured or restored so that the buyer could differentiate between a refurbished and a new product.

When it comes to performance and durability, refurbished computer drives are as trustworthy as new drives. Recycling restores their original storage capacity. The process properly formats the drive by cleaning the operating system and any stored data. As far as the compatibility of a re-manufactured drive with a computer goes, there has never been a problem. These drives are much in demand in the computer hardware industry as a majority of computer users are opting for restored drives. Refurbished drives lead to a significant reduction in the cost hence an economically viable option. Yet another advantage of a restored drive is that it is environmental friendly as recycling clears the drive of all the electronic waste.

Refurbished computer drives are available for desktop computers, laptops and even servers. A restored drive could be used as the main drive for a system and also as backup drive for storage or recovery of critical data. The chances a refurbished drive working bad are very low since drives get affected due to electrical failures on the card which is replaced in the recycling process. With a new card, there is no difference between a new and a refurbished drive. Re-manufactured drive provides a cost effective choice to those who always look for new ways to upgrade their system’s working capacity. If you are looking for a new drive for your system then consider a restored one.

How is technology changing? How changing technologies are bringing visible changes in work places (as well as life)? What difference it is making? The technology that was hot and hip only some ten years ago seems form stone age today. Look back at what gadgets you have been using in the past and then compare them with what you use today and you will know the differences. I was just wondering if Techno Station readers remember what they have been using in the past?

I started computing (with DOS operating system) in around 1998. It was a rare phenomenon then. It was totally different. So were many other things in my personal us. Newspapers were written with longhand and or composed alphabet by alphabet. Photos were taken developed and then plate transferred on paper.

And now! Remember when Apple surprised users with the first appearance of the MacBook Air, the world’s (then) thinnest notebook. Imagine in 1998, Apple users were as happy to use their first iMac, the Bondi Blue. Yes, it was marketed as a computer for the Internet age – hence the “i” of iMac. Bondi Blue delivered plenty of style and newfangled USB ports. What it lacked was storage (just 4GB) and a floppy drive.

I was just wondering if Techno Station readers remember what they have been using in the past?

In closing I remind here How changing technologies are bringing visible changes in work places (as well as life)? What difference it is making? The technology that was hot and hip only some ten years ago seems form stone age today.

In 2011 the Iditarod ended with a new winner, a new record set and a new component. For those unfamiliar with the Iditarod, visualize a person on a sled pulled by a team of dogs over some of the most extreme and gorgeous wilderness terrain known to man. For around 1,150 miles the dog sled team crosses frozen rivers, jagged mountain ranges, desolate tundra and dense forests. As if that weren’t enough, factor in subzero temperatures, winds that generate zero visibility and long hours of darkness and you have a race called the Iditarod that Alaska claims as its own.

If you’re wondering what does this have to do with GPS devices, well for the first time in Iditarod history, the mushers were permitted to use personal navigational devices (PND) – GPS units. Race participants who are in favor of making the use of personal GPS devices an option, are quick to point out the significance of maintaining a steady pace. They explain that if the speed is inconsistent or too fast, the rate of injury to the dogs is increased substantially. Additionally, it is easy to misjudge your sled speed without the benefit of a GPS. Proponents for the use of GPS tracking devices, such as Garmin, like to call attention to John Baker’s experience. In 2010, Baker was considered a contender for the title. Regrettably, thinking himself to be lost, he miscalculated his position and lost hours trying to get back on the trail. Those lost hours ended up costing Baker a chance at the title. If he had been able to use a GPS device, he would have quickly discovered that he was in fact on the correct path and not at all lost.

In spite of the benefits of GPS technology, there are the purists who hold fast to their opinion against allowing the use of handheld devices. Since the first Iditarod race in 1973, the so called “Last Great Race on Earth” has been considered the ultimate match pitting man and animal against nature and the Alaskan wilderness. Finishing the race with only trail markers, dogs, a sense of direction and raw instincts is what makes the experience riveting. Four-time Iditarod champion, Lance Mackey, sides with the purists and said recently, “I think it’s kind of funny that all of a sudden they need a GPS to figure out how fast they’re going and what their dogs are capable of doing. What have they been doing this whole time?”

Everyone has read about the crime prevention aspects of GPS tracking devices and how police have been able to locate and apprehend stolen cars, bikes, appliances etc. The creative use of GPS tracking devices continues to amaze as it expands and protects its users. Recently we heard about a bank robber who was caught because a quick thinking teller placed a GPS device in the bag along with the money. Apparently the robber was only looking for signs of a dye pack and not a tracking device. Another robbery attempt foiled by a GPS device.

Another story reported is a state-of-the-art GPS device which makes it possible for authorities to fully control a bus by remote means. The idea is tied in with the Department of Homeland Security, and is being used to thwart attempts by terrorists to hijack buses and potentially turn a passenger loaded vehicle into a weapon capable of massive devastation. In the face of a terrorist threat, all a driver need do is to hit a panic button, which is discreetly hidden somewhere around the steering wheel. The distress signal which is generated activates a GPS device connected to the bus’ onboard computer, and lets the dispatcher identify the vehicle, its location, speed and direction of travel. At this point, the dispatcher can remotely override the bus systems and slowly bring the bus to a safe and complete stop, preventing it from restarting. Currently the Gray Line double-decker tourist buses and Coach USA are using this technology to improve the safety of their passengers. The New Jersey Transit is presently in the process of equipping its fleet of approximately 3,000 busses with this system, and other municipalities are planning to follow do the same.

We owe our thanks to companies such as Garmin, Magellan and TomTom, just to name a few, because our lives are being enhanced and made safer through technology. Though for most of us, our introduction to the tech world was through gaming, fortunately we have come a long way since then. Our daily use of many of these various forms of tech advancement link us to global positioning satellites, which in turn provide us with vital information. We can thank GPS devices for helping us keep track of our loved ones, our pets, our vehicles and even some of our toys. They can prevent us from getting and staying lost for any considerable length of time, and they have the ability to help us find food, clothing and shelter by directing us to shopping malls, restaurants and hotel accommodations. Oh, and by the way, you can also use it to play games! Don’t forget to have some fun along the way.

The law of diminishing marginal returns

I recently had a bit of a debate with a technology consultant friend who knows I am big on content and detail within project planning and the contracts that support a technology deal. We found ourselves talking about that principle of economics called the law of diminishing marginal returns. His point was that for project owners who are in the midst of planning a new project—gathering requirements, fleshing out specifications, polling user preferences, etc.—the law of diminishing marginal returns sets in much earlier than they realize. The resources spent during the initial planning stages produce some hefty returns. But soon after, spending the same amount of resources again, and the next time after that, will produce smaller and smaller chunks of benefit. When you are caught up in a planning process, it is often difficult to identify the point at which your cost-benefit curve has begun to flatten.

What my friend was saying seemed plausible, and because I did not have any evidence to the contrary, I just accepted his theory. Then I thought of a possible consequence of his theory, and I said, “You’re not going to go out and start spreading this thought around the technology community, are you?”

Threatened evangelist

My fear was this. Here was I, this evangelist of content and detail within every information technology project, and across the table was a fellow who could undermine the past and future progress of my mission by telling folks they actually need less planning and critical thinking for their technology projects and not more. Project owners’ planning and thinking are, after all, what generate the content and detail I crave and have come to respect.

Well, we talked some more, and my friend added some clarification. As it turns out, he was suggesting mainly that project owners not waste time and money planning what cannot be planned effectively at a particular point in time. Made sense. I was still squirming, but now a bit relieved.

Obvious example

You have decided to use a staged or iterative approach for your next project. You will buy some off-the-shelf software and customize it a fair amount. Phase 1 might involve extending a discrete element of existing functionality and then wiring up to a live database for some testing.

In this example, there is really no point to thinking through the details of Phases 2 through 5 or estimating costs within those phases, except in either case at a very high level, because: 1) unless Phase 1 is completed smoothly and with an acceptable cost, you will never get to the subsequent phases; and 2) you have not yet tested your assumptions about costing within Phase 1. Indeed, you probably chose an iterative approach for this project because of your inability to plan your project effectively from start to finish.

Less obvious examples

My friend and I talked some more, and we moved beyond the obvious examples, the ones that are easy to accept. My natural reaction was to resist any further extension of his theory because I knew he would be cutting closer and closer to the bone, threatening the very foundation of my evangelist mission. However, sitting before me was a bright person and a clear thinker, with nearly two decades of experience with technology. I had to listen (nervously). “When the student is ready to learn, the teacher will appear.”

Requirements gathering – A good thing, no doubt, and something the experts have been encouraging us to do more of over the last ten years. “Insufficient requirements development cited as leading cause of project failure.” When it comes to requirements, we have been led to believe that more is not enough. Surely there is a point at which more requirements are not helpful (and may even be detrimental), but the experts have not told us how to determine just when we have turned the corner.

Specifications development – Same story. Develop specifications thoroughly now or risk project failure.

User preferences – Same story. Involve your users in your planning process. Otherwise, “If you build it, they won’t come.”

We have heard so much preaching on these topics that each of us can rattle off a number of clichés for each topic. The advice has been mostly good, but we are hammered with it by speaker after speaker, in article after article.

Reconciliation

As much as I resisted the flow of this discussion with my friend, I have to admit that what he was saying made perfect sense to me. But now I had to find some way to reconcile two divergent concepts: on the one hand, my long-held belief that more project planning and critical thinking should always be one’s aspiration, and on the other, my realization that you truly can have too much of a good thing.

Ultimately, I found the reconciliation I needed with just one insight. It occurred to me that, with all of the speakers and literature out there telling us to engage in more best practices for our technology projects and more often, we have become conditioned to believe that more is not enough—in fact, because of the nature of the beast, more can never be enough. We have been doing more and more, and the incremental improvements we have witnessed, together with the new articles we read, encourage us to keep doing more and more. Of course, our intention is good, but when can we stop doing more? When should we stop doing more?

It’s all relative

I think it all boils down to relativity—your relative sophistication as a technology buyer, and the relative nature of your particular project. If you started heeding the experts’ advice many years ago, your approach to buying technology may be fairly sophisticated by now. You may be doing an appropriate level of planning for your projects, and maybe you occasionally do too much. Other organizations are just now opening their eyes to a better way, perhaps prompted by a recent problematic project.

Second, when enough is enough depends on your particular project. Your goal is to plan effectively and thoroughly for all aspects of your project, but be mindful that your present need or ability to plan certain elements may not yet exist. Further, even if you have the present need and ability to plan a certain aspect of your project, do not overdo it. For example, do not continue to add more and more requirements to your requirements basket as if quantity were your only goal.

On this last point, remind yourself that requirements, specifications, user preferences, and every other item on your project-planning list have at least one thing in common. Once you have thought of them and cemented them into some spreadsheet, they have a way of hanging around for the duration of your planning process, and often through completion of your project. Instead of waiting to whack some of these hangers-on toward the end of a phase or at the end of your project (“backward creep” of scope or deliverables), attempt to prioritize them at an early stage of your project. You will not even open Requirements Container 2 until the high-priority requirements in Container 1 have been exhausted (satisfied or deliberately discarded). A prioritization approach could save you time, dollars and other resources.

Conclusion

For many of us, it may be best not to let go of our conditioned response to project planning and critical thinking—not just yet anyway. The conditioning represents an overall positive motivation, its underlying purpose is producing results, and our technology procurement process, including its planning element, may still have plenty of room for improvement. The more sophisticated technology buyers among us might want to put the brakes on the conditioned response a bit.

Regardless of what camp you are in (and until further notice from the experts!), be at least mindful of the fact that there is such a thing as too much project planning. I, for one, am now a believer.

These days we simply can’t live without our computers. I don’t care what your occupation may be, you probably have a computer of some sort sitting in your home or office, or both. The more modern technology now being, the laptop notebook computer. If you have not conformed to the laptop notebook computer, you will soon enough. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s all that is available soon. How much handier can you get than carrying your computer system around with you. Anywhere you choose to do some work is now available.

It wasn’t long ago that we all had the desktops. Now, don’t get me wrong, the massive desktop computers were great. They got the job done. However, now it’s hard to praise the old dinosaurs when we have the option of laptop notebook computers. These small wonders get all of the same tasks done, but without the hassle of being restricted to one specific area, or room in the house. We have achieved Internet freedom. I love the ability of being wireless and venturing to any part of my home with my laptop notebook computer in hand. After all, what’s the point of having wireless access when your computer is stuck on a desktop. It kind of defeats the purpose.

It’s funny that so many businesses are offering Internet access. This is a great way to get more business. Simply tell people that they don’t have to remain home to work online, or to research for that big term paper. The convenience of the laptop notebook computer is incredible. People tote them around now days in their school bags and brief cases. Our work and fun are no longer connected to wires.

One of the many advantages is the DVD option. I didn’t think about this much at first when I purchased my Mac Ibook, but the first time my family and I went on a road trip, the advantage became clear. We could actually watch movies in the car. It’s so easy with such a small computer. That’s what makes these notebooks so great. They are always getting smaller, but doing more. The laptop notebook computer is a clear example of where our future is headed. While we love having computer and Internet access, we crave more freedom. This is why the laptop notebook computer is so prevalent in our current society. If you haven’t conformed to a simpler way of life yet, then just hop online and you will see a number of possibilities in order to purchase your first laptop notebook computer. You won’t be sorry!
